Hi,
I have a very special eLetter for you this week, special
because it isn't written by me!
Before the screams of delight stop me from working I'd
like to thank those of you who responded to my plea
last week for special stories as to what you like best
about 'eBay Confidential' as well as other things you'd
like to see more/less of in the newsletter.
The entries were wonderful and well worth giving a
special slot in this eLetter (actually ALL of this eLetter)
so everyone can benefit from some of the tips and
ideas I received.
I'll be sending all entrants their free gifts later today but
for now, let's all look for ways to make more money,
save money, eliminate problems on eBay.
These are the tips I liked best:

Inspiration for Anyone Keen to Leave the '9 to 5'
***
eBay really does work well for anyone prepared to
spend time growing their business online. A couple of
years ago I signed up for one of your programmes
called 'eBay Confidential'. It really was life changing.
I used to work in a bank. After starting your course
within 4 months I managed to quit my job and started a
full time business on eBay. Now I am so happy with my
life working in the comfort of my sofa. Thanks for your
advice and valuable step to step instructions in your
monthly magazine. I never miss your newsletter and
read them very carefully, because they are well worth it.
It's really a pleasure to see that there are some people
who can really help you to progress. (Subscriber: W. I.)

Here are a few tips for what works well for me:
- Make sure your auctions finish after 6pm or even
between 9 - 10pm (This
timing has always worked for me)
- Put a catchy title as your listing
- Always put a picture gallery on the listing.
- Give something away for free (like free batteries)
* (This is part of a long and very informative email I
received containing tips and ideas from a really big
time eBay seller who also operates several other sites
online.) These tips outline some of the malicious
practices buyers work to try to ruin another person's
eBay business. They don't make pretty reading, but
they are essential reading. 'To be forewarned is to be
forearmed' as they say. On to the tips...
1) We had a malicious bidder once who bid on about
194 of the same item from us, wracking up the eBay
fees for well over $3,500. They never paid, and luckily
we were able to have each and every item returned to
the store and the fees reinstated, but guess what?
Because we only have the eBay store on the first tier,
we had to manually go in to each and every item and
click on the old item never paid for dispute, all while on
dial up as we are in the mountains and it is all we have
available. However, the good news was that it gave us
3 months of PowerSeller status.
2) We also have had buyers that bid on us whose own
rating was not up to par. So eBay told us to make sure
we go in and set our settings so that anyone who bids
on our auctions has a verified PayPal account, has an
eBay account in good standing, has a rating better
than 0, and doesn't have any negatives on their account
within the past 10 days. Furthermore they said to make
sure that bidders can only bid on up to 5 items only, so
no malicious bidding and that if we could to make it a
Buy It Now purchase, since that makes a buyer pay
now, not later. We also have had to come up with rules
for our auction readers that have become necessary, as
we have had many try to scam us, but eBay, PayPal,
and others have backed us up.
(Editor: Very sadly that advice about not dealing with
buyers having minus feedback will work when sellers
can no longer leave negative feedback even for truly
criminal buyers!)
3) Always send emails containing eBooks and
download links and any correspondence with a return
receipt. You can prove to eBay you sent an email with
the headers they can read AND if they click on it, that
means you also have proof you sent the item.
4) A great way to also send the emails is to send
yourself a copy of the email when you send it to your
customers as if you got the email back, they should
have got it as well.
Along with these amazing tips, Kris Williams, Author
and Designer for DataWorkZ.com, has compiled a neat
selection of free books for our readers. Go get them

I subscribed to 'e-Bay Confidential' a few months back
as I was looking for an independent revenue source to
allow early retirement from a 30 year high-pressure
career in aerospace. I have used eBay casually, buying
and selling, for several years and have amassed a
modest rating of 500 odd, with a 100% positive
feedback. My wife is severely disabled but is a highly
experienced 'comper' entering hundreds of online and
entry form based competitions per week to keep
herself occupied. We have used eBay as a means of
disposal for the many prizes that my wife wins that we
have no use for.
(Editor. I especially liked this letter because until I took
up writing full time I was a 'comper' too and I won
hundreds of lovely things that could be sold and create
a useful second income. Worth considering by anyone
with a few hours time to spare each week!)

My partner Caroline and I buy and sell Wade
porcelain. We buy cheap either on eBay or at car boot
sales and even charity shops and resell on eBay or at
car boot sales. We don't deal in Wimsies, only Wade
collectibles. i.e plates , decanters, takards, etc., etc.
We have numerous Wade catalogues so know the
prices more or less of most items that we see for sale.
My strategy is to buy at 1/5th of book price at least
and sell at half book price. That way I've at least
doubled my money outlay and the buyer is getting their
Wade at half book price and really believes they are
getting a bargain and everyone is happy all round. Our
very best buy/sale was a Wade Bells whisky decanter in
very good condition. It commemorated the wedding of
Charles and Diana, (Royals are always saleable) bought
at car boot for £5.00, book price was £125.00 and sold
for £72.00. We've done this twice and made £55.00 +
£52.00 for a modest £12.00 outlay.
We started with a £10.00 float and doubled that and
reinvested it and doubled and reinvested. We've made
a few mistakes and errors of judgement but we are still
ahead by over £2,000 to date. That money has paid for
three breaks away in a hotel this year.
